As Deaf Connect’s major fundraiser, Deaf Lottery helps deliver vital services for Deaf Australians nationwide. One such service is Ageing Well – a home care program offered in Auslan (Australian Sign Language).
For many older Deaf people, care in Auslan isn’t just a convenience – it’s a necessity. Getting services in their first language helps Deaf seniors stay connected to their community and maintain their independence.
We are largest employer of Deaf people in Australia, which means that all of our staff have a deep understanding of Auslan and Deaf culture, often through their own lived experiences. The support we provide is not only practical, but also inclusive and culturally affirming.
One of Ageing Well’s participants, Audrey Doonan, shared why getting services in Auslan is so important.
At 93 years old, Audrey Doonan lives in Brisbane, Queensland, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and close friends. For years, she has relied on Deaf Connect’s Ageing Well program to support her daily needs.
“I have support workers who are Deaf and use Auslan. This helps make my life easier, because communication is so important. Especially in situations when I need to make decisions about my health or the kinds of support I receive in my home.”
"My support workers arrange interpreters for my medical appointments, since most doctors don’t know Auslan.”
When Audrey was diagnosed with inoperable cancer last year, her Home Care Package was increased to Level 3, giving her access to additional support including physiotherapy, meal deliveries, cleaning, social support, and transport.
“I am very grateful that Deaf Connect provides me with a Home Care Package. I would have struggled without it.”
Like many Deaf people, Audrey faces challenges with the lack of Auslan accessibility – especially in medical situations.
But with the help of her support workers, she can go to medical appointments with an Auslan interpreter, and understand the information her doctors provide.
Audrey also remains active in the community, and frequently attends events for Deaf seniors held at Deaf Connect’s Brisbane office.
“Some of my hobbies include playing cards, puzzles, reading and watching the news. I also spend time with my family, who come and visit me. Every fortnight I love to attend the Deaf Craft group at Deaf Connect, and different Deaf events like playing cards, socialising and more.”
Deaf Connect’s Ageing Well service operates across Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia.
Every ticket purchased in the Deaf Lottery helps make these vital services possible.
