As a FIFO worker in the mines, Kyle had just arrived at the airport to fly back home to his family.
He was waiting to board with his workmates when he got the call that would change everything.
“I usually don’t answer random numbers,” he said. “I honestly thought it was spam.”
On the other end of the line, Deaf Lottery’s Head of Fundraising and Operations, Paul Stockwell, was ready to give him the big news.
Kyle had just won a huge $800,000 – PLUS an extra $30K for getting a $100 ticket book!
“Paul mentioned the Deaf Lottery, so I thought they were trying to sell me more tickets,” Kyle said.
“He asked if I was aware of the major prize, and then told me I’d won it. I was like, oh yeah, sure.”
“He goes, ‘No mate, I’m serious – you’ve won the grand prize!’ And I was like, what!?”
The disbelief wasn’t private. Kyle’s workmates heard the entire call as it happened.
“They were all standing there,” he said. “After that, I know three or four of them signed up straight away.”
As a Deaf Lottery VIP member since 2019, Kyle had $50 a month quietly coming out in the background.
“It’s just one of those things you don’t really think about,” he said.
Kyle first signed up after a chance encounter on the Gold Coast.
“I was at my local shopping centre and a guy with hearing aids pulled me aside,” he said.
“We just had a really good chat. He explained the Deaf Lottery and I thought, yeah – may as well.”
“I don’t get pokies. That never made sense to me. This does – it goes to a good cause, and your odds are better,” he said.
Reflecting on when he first found out, Kyle’s wife was the first person he called to tell the big news.
“She was just about to go in with a client,” he said. “I told her, then I had to get on a plane. When I landed, she rang me back crying!”
And the timing of the win couldn’t have been better.
Kyle and his wife had recently sold their home – a smaller unit that no longer fit their growing family.
“We made a decent amount,” Kyle said. “But it wasn’t enough to upsize.”
“We needed something bigger. This win just set us straight into it.”
Choosing the gold bullion prize package fit naturally with the plans they already had in place.
“I trade in gold and silver,” Kyle said.
“The plan was always to work our way up until we could get back into property. This just bumped us up.”
For now, Kyle and his wife are watching the market and waiting for the right time to get a new property, feeling confident and financially secure.
"We’re just going to chill here for a bit,” Kyle said. “Wait and see when a good time is to get back into real estate and find somewhere that can fit our whole family.”
Giving back to their loved ones was also non-negotiable.
“My wife’s mum owns a travel agency,” Kyle said. “So we’re shouting my in-laws and my dad a trip. They’re pumped. Honestly, spending that time together will be so good.”
From everyone here at the Deaf Lottery, we’re thrilled for Kyle and his family on their incredible win. It’s a great reminder that your luck really can change in the blink of an eye!
