Inspiring the Next Generation of Deaf Athletes

One of the ways Deaf Lottery supporters make a difference is through Deaf Connect’s grants and sponsorships program – funding that goes directly back into the Deaf community to support local initiatives and empower Deaf people across Australia.

Recently, Deaf Connect was proud to sponsor Deaf Sports Australia in creating an inspiring video series, “Beyond the Game: Young Deaf Athletes of Australia.”

This series follows nine incredible young Deaf and hard of hearing athletes from across the country, each with a unique story of resilience, ambition and community spirit. The goal is to show Deaf youth that there are no limits to what they can achieve, both on and off the field.

From swimming to basketball, dance to rock climbing, each athlete’s journey highlights the power of sport to build confidence, strengthen identity and inspire others.

“Watching these videos reminds me of my own sporting experiences and the highs and lows we go through to achieve our goals – I had goosebumps watching this generation share their journey for everyone to enjoy, learn and gain inspiration. An amazing effort by the project team,” Deaf Sports Australia General Manager Phil Harper said.

The series shines a spotlight on nine athletes from different states and sporting backgrounds, including:

  • Sienna Compton, a multi-award-winning swimmer and gymnast from New South Wales with big sporting ambitions.
  • Ethan Powell, a basketballer from Western Australia who is passionate about creating more sporting opportunities for Deaf people.
  • Calvin Black, a lifelong basketballer from Victoria with a bold personality and love for the game.
  • Phoenix Courtney, a dedicated hip hop dancer from Queensland who values independence and accessibility.
  • Jem Blackmore, a passionate rock climber from Queensland who thrives on challenge and adventure.
  • Rebekah Fraser, a driven swimmer from Western Australia with an impressive track record and go-getter attitude.
  • Rayan Taya, a netballer from Victoria who encourages Deaf kids to pursue their sporting dreams.
  • Oliad Omar, a table tennis enthusiast from Victoria who has loved sport since childhood.
  • Chrispine Wilondja, a determined footballer from Queensland who believes in hard work and tenacity.

Three of these inspiring stories – featuring Ethan, Jem and Sienna – are now live, with the remaining six to be released in the coming weeks.

By supporting the Deaf Lottery, you help make initiatives like this possible. Your contribution supports Deaf-led organisations and projects that uplift the next generation – showing young Deaf and hard of hearing Australians that their goals are within reach.
