Lottery 219: Malcolm’s Incredible Deaf Lottery Win

When Malcolm bought his Deaf Lottery ticket, he didn’t think too much about it—it just felt like the right thing to do. Little did he know that simple decision would come back in a big way.

“I was at Pacific Fair shopping centre with my daughter, and I told her, ‘I think this year’s going to be a good year.’ When I saw the Deaf Lottery table, something about it just felt lucky. There weren’t too many people around, so I went up, looked at the tickets, and picked up a $30 book. I walked away without thinking much more about it, left it on my clipboard in the kitchen, and forgot all about it,” he said.

But that lucky gut feeling turned into reality just a few short weeks later.

Malcolm received the phone call every lottery supporter dreams of—he had won the First Prize, taking home a staggering $800,000, plus an extra $10,000 as a bonus for purchasing a $30 ticket book!

“At first, I thought maybe I’d won a minor prize. But then Paul [Deaf Lottery Head of Fundraising and Operations] got straight to the point and told me I’d won first prize—I couldn’t believe it. It felt really strange, almost unreal. It’s a hard feeling to describe. It’s a good feeling, but my emotions were running high. I kept thinking, ‘Are you sure this is right?’ When I got the call, I was standing up, and I felt a bit shaky.”

Now, with his bank account full and a new vacation on the horizon, Malcolm and his partner are looking forward to making the most of their winnings.

“We chose to get $20,000 in cash, take out a $30,000 travel voucher, and then put the remaining $750,000 into savings. I want to go on a trip with my partner over Christmas,” he said.

When Malcolm first found out about his fortune, sharing the news with his family was another big moment. “I actually video-called them. They had a bit of a hint, but thought I’d maybe won $5,000 or something small. They were overwhelmed and lost for words!”

Despite his newfound winnings, Malcolm still plans to continue working part-time, but appreciates the sense of security in this next chapter of his life.

“Now I have the time to think about this money and what it means for our future. I’ve got financial security now.”

When asked what he would say to others considering buying a ticket, Malcolm’s advice is simple: “Have a go. Your chances are a lot higher than you think, and I’d definitely recommend supporting this lottery. You never know.”

As for future tickets? Malcolm said he’ll continue with his support of the Deaf Lottery in the years to come.
Malcolm’s story is a great reminder that sometimes, a simple gut feeling can lead to something truly life-changing. From all of us at the Deaf Lottery, we wish him the very best with what’s ahead.
