Lottery 220: Our Lottery 220 Winner Isn't Even 20!

D L220 Winners Story Web

At just 19 years old, Daniel has aspirations much like anyone else his age. His life revolves around work, mates, and family. But Daniel isn’t your average 19-year-old, he’s the Deaf Lottery’s youngest winner in over a decade. And for this young tradie from the Central Coast, a regular day on site took a turn when he got that winning call that changes everything. Looking back on how it all started, Daniel recalls an average trip to Coles which led to him becoming a Deaf Lottery VIP member.

“I’d just finished up my shopping when I noticed the Deaf Lottery stand outside. They pulled me into a conversation, and before I knew it, I’d bought a $30 ticket book. I just thought – why not?” he said.

Daniel signed up to the VIP Club with that first ticket book – giving him automatic tickets in each draw, and more chances at several prizes.

Weeks later, while working on-site, Daniel had no idea that he had several missed calls from Ian, Deaf Lottery’s Head of Marketing and Sales. It wasn’t until his workmates complained about the endless ringing from the phone in his esky that he finally snuck a look at his messages.

“When I saw that the first text was from the Deaf Lottery, I remember thinking – what the hell?” he said.
“Luckily my dad was also on site that day. I went over to him and said, ‘apparently I won money.’ He just told me, ‘call them back!’ But I still wasn’t convinced, so I handed him the phone.”

“When he started talking to Ian, he knew straight away it was real. That’s when it finally started sinking in.”
Reflecting on the exact moment he found out he was the first-prize winner, Daniel highlighted his pure disbelief.

“I was standing on my esky at work when I found out I’d won. At first, I thought it was $800! I even said it out loud, and when Ian corrected me – explaining it was actually $800,000 – let’s just say that everyone heard me. I reckon even the guys down the road probably heard too!”

And the best part is, because Daniel purchased a $30 book, he also won the associated book buyers prize of an additional $10,000 in gold bullion, taking his winnings up to $810,000.

Daniel explained that just a few days after the big win, he found out that his workmate –who also buys tickets in the Deaf Lottery – received an email about a winner from Lake Haven.

“He showed me the email with our suburb and the ticket number, I admitted to him, ‘that’s mine!’ He buys tickets too, so I told him to definitely keep getting them!”

With his winnings, Daniel chose the car prize package and has already put his name down at a dealership.
“I get my choice of car ...I’d love to get a Holden Commodore if I can find one. That’d be the dream,” he said. As for what’s next, Daniel has decided to keep things simple.

“I’ll probably go on a trip with family, but I haven’t thought too far ahead. I promised my dad I wouldn’t quit my job. So yeah, I’ll probably keep working.”

Reflecting on what it feels like to have won, Daniel explained that he’s still processing how much his life has changed. “There aren’t many words to describe it,” he said.

“It’s not every day that your average 19-year-old wins $800,000. It feels pretty great that it ended up being me!”

From all of us at Deaf Lottery, we wish Daniel all the best in his next chapter. And to all our future winners, the journey ahead is filled with endless possibilities!
